5 Essential Tips For First Aid Kits In Schools

Children often get injured at school. Fortunately, most of the time it’s not serious. It’s a good idea to have a first-aid kit around and to know what to do if there is an accident.

Your first aid kit box should be waterproof and easy to carry. Keep it locked and store it out of an area that children can access it.

A first aid kit for schools is an essential tool to have in case of emergencies. Here are five tips.

1. Store Your First Aid Kit In A Secure, Easy To Access Location

In an emergency, it’s important to have your first aid kit items on hand.

These items should be easy to access and stored in a location where they are easily found. By storing these items together, you’ll be prepared for any situation.

A kit can be stored in a backpack, in the nurse’s office, or in the staff room.

The kit should also include any medications that are needed for people with allergies or chronic conditions.

2. Make Sure Your First Aid Kits Is Stocked With All The Necessary Materials

You should regularly check your first aid kit and ensure that all the supplies you need are fully stocked up. The last thing you need is a first aid kit that is out of essential supplies.

Every first aid kit should include: Bandages, Gauze Pads, Tape, Antibiotic Cream, Alcohol wipes, scissors, tweezers and disposable gloves.

Bandages, Gauze Pads & Tape

Bandages are made of a cotton gauze pad and a sticky adhesive on the other side to wrap around and cover an injury, like a cut or scrape. Gauze pads are made of cotton gauzes wrapped in layers and then rolled up into a square shape. Tape is used to hold bandages in place until they heal.

Antibiotic cream

Antibiotic creams are used to treat mild skin infections. They work by killing the bacteria that causes the infection. Antibiotic creams are applied to the skin, usually in a thin layer, as they can be rubbed into the skin better than pills or tablets.

After applying an antibiotic cream, it is recommended to wash your hands thoroughly before touching anything else

Alcohol wipes or solutions

The first aid alcohol wipe is a sterile pad that contains a small amount of isopropyl alcohol, which helps to clean the skin before application of an antibiotic cream or other topical medication. Alcohol wipes are often used in schools for first aid kits as well as in home medicine cabinets.

Scissors

Scissors are vital in a first aid kit because they can be used to cut bandages and tape.

Tweezers and splinter remover tools

There are many accidents in the school that can lead to a need for a splinter removal tool.

The first step in removing a splinter is to use adhesive tape to gently lift the end of the splinter that is closest to your skin. You should then clean the area and dry it carefully before using either tweezers or a needle to remove the remainder of the splinter.

Disposable gloves

Disposable gloves are easy to carry and use, and they protect students from the spread of germs. They are especially important when dealing with a cut or open wound to avoid infection.

3) Ensure Your First Aid Kits Are Updated Regularly

Keep your first aid kit updated by replacing used items and by checking the use-by date of any medicines. Be sure to throw away anything that is past its use-by date.

Keep a list of emergency phone numbers in the kit and make sure they are correct

The numbers should include:

  • 112 and 999
  • your School’s Eircode
  • your nearest hospital emergency department that sees children
  • your GP
  • your local GP Out of Hours Service

4) Educate staff on how to use the supplies properly

It is important that staff know what’s in the kit and how to use it. An easy-to-use guide can help with this. You could print out this HSE child safety first aid guide and keep it with your first aid box.

5) Consider adding items like sunscreen or insect repellent for the summer months

The summer months are a great time to enjoy the outdoors. However, it can be dangerous to spend too much time in the sun without protection. Make sure to pack sunscreen and insect repellent. Medichem does’t sell insect repellent, but it is always a good product to have in the summer months.

COVID-19 and your First Aid Kit

You should also keep your first aid kit stocked with masks, hand sanitizer and antigen tests. To find out more about how masks can help stop the spread of the virus read here.
